Jordan year-end closing checklist: the dates that rule 2026

This year-end closing checklist for Jordan starts from one date: a company whose financial year ends on 31 December 2026 must file its 2026 income tax return and pay the balance of tax by the end of the fourth month, which is 30 April 2027. Every other closing task has to land before it.

The key dates for the 2026 year, as of October 2026:

  • First 15 days of January 2027: social security contributions for December 2026.
  • January 2027: the sales tax return and payment for a November–December 2026 period.
  • 30 January 2027: the second advance payment of income tax, if your gross business income exceeded JOD 1,000,000 in the previous tax period. Each advance payment equals 40% of the tax computed on that half-year's financial statements.
  • Within 30 days of paying salaries or fees: the income tax withheld from them.
  • 31 March 2027: a limited liability company sends a copy of its audited financial statements and annual report to the Companies Controller, and employers give the Social Security Corporation the wage data of staff employed in January.
  • 30 April 2027: the annual return and the balance of tax, under Articles 17 and 18 of the Income Tax Law No. 34 of 2014.

Note that 30 April 2027 is a Friday. Article 75 of the same law moves a deadline that falls on an official holiday to the next working day, so watch for the Income and Sales Tax Department (ISTD) announcement, but treat Thursday 29 April as your real deadline.

Missing it is expensive. Article 63 of the law fines a company that files late up to JOD 300 (JOD 1,000 for public and private shareholding companies), and Article 36 adds a delay fine of 0.4% of the unpaid tax for every week or part of a week, capped at the amount of the tax itself.

Week-by-week year-end checklist: December 2026 to 30 April 2027

Spread the close over 22 working weeks instead of cramming it into April. Here is a week-by-week checklist for a company with a calendar financial year, with working weeks running Sunday to Thursday.

  • Weeks 1–2 (1–10 December 2026): agree the timetable and the stock-count date with your auditor. Clean master data: customer tax numbers in digits only, the right country on each customer, and your own company TIN.
  • Weeks 3–4 (13–24 December): clear every JoFotara error, send customers their statements, review aged receivables, and check that your regular local suppliers appear on ISTD's list of suppliers registered in the national e-invoicing system.
  • Week 5 (27–31 December): count stock and cash on 31 December, record goods in transit, and submit the last 2026 invoices to JoFotara.
  • Weeks 6–7 (3–14 January 2027): pay December social security, remit December withholdings, and reconcile every bank account to 31 December.
  • Weeks 8–9 (17–28 January): file and pay the November–December sales tax return, make the second advance payment before 30 January if it applies, then lock 2026 sales and purchases in Odoo.
  • Weeks 10–13 (31 January–25 February): post depreciation, provisions, accruals and the inventory valuation, then hand draft statements to the auditor.
  • Weeks 14–18 (28 February–1 April): finish the audit, send the LLC's audited statements and annual report to the Companies Controller by 31 March, and give the Social Security Corporation the January wage data.
  • Weeks 19–22 (4–29 April): file the income tax return and pay the balance by Thursday 29 April, hold the partners' annual general assembly by 30 April, then set the hard lock date.

Bookmark this list, and give each line an owner and a date in your team calendar. If one week slips, the next deadline still holds, so move the work forward rather than the date.

JoFotara, 16% sales tax and payroll: close the tax trail first

Before you lock 2026, every sales invoice, credit note and Point of Sale receipt should be accepted by JoFotara, and every local purchase should be backed by a national e-invoice. Since 1 April 2025, ISTD accepts local purchases of goods and services as tax-deductible expenses only when the invoices come from the national e-invoicing system or a system connected to it.

In Odoo with the Jordan localization, run this sweep:

  • Filter 2026 invoices and credit notes by JoFotara State. Anything still To Send, or showing a JoFotara Error, was never accepted.
  • Treat Sent (Demo) as unsent: it means the company was in demo mode.
  • Check Point of Sale orders too, as they carry their own JoFotara State.
  • Link each credit note to its invoice through Reversal of, and put the return reason in Customer Reference. JoFotara rejects negative quantities and prices.
  • For purchases, scan supplier QR codes with the Sanad app or check ISTD's list of registered suppliers.

Our JoFotara e-invoicing guide covers the basics.

For the 16% general sales tax, a registered company files a return for every two-month period, even with no sales, and pays during the month after the period ends. ISTD sets each registrant's period dates, so if yours runs November–December 2026, that return falls due in January 2027, and a late return can cost JOD 100 to 500. Reconcile your sales tax accounts to every return covering 2026; our 16% sales tax guide shows the Odoo reports.

Payroll balances should also be zero or explained at 31 December:

  • Social security contributions for each month are paid within the first 15 days of the next; see our social security and payroll guide.
  • Tax withheld from salaries, and the 5% a company withholds from fees paid to resident doctors, lawyers, engineers, auditors, consultants, brokers and agents, is remitted within 30 days of payment.
  • Collect certificates for the tax your customers withheld from your fees, and receipts for the 2% paid on imports at customs: both are credited against your income tax.

Stock, receivables and assets, then the Odoo 20 lock dates

Auditors test the balance sheet first, so count, age and depreciate before you lock anything in Odoo.

  • Stock: count it on 31 December (Inventory > Operations > Physical Inventory) and value it at the lower of cost and net realisable value, as IFRS requires. Write down expired and slow-moving items. More in our inventory guide.
  • Receivables: run the aged receivables report. The Income Tax Law lets a company deduct a doubtful-debt provision only if its statements follow IFRS and are audited by a licensed auditor, and other provisions are not deductible unless the law expressly allows them.
  • Fixed assets: confirm they exist, record disposals and post depreciation to 31 December. Tax depreciation follows the rates in the Expenses, Provisions, Depreciation and Exemptions Regulation No. 55 of 2015, and land is never depreciated.

Odoo's Jordan localization brings the chart of accounts, the 16%, exempt and 0% export taxes, the tax report and JoFotara e-invoicing. These modules are open source (LGPL), so the chart, taxes and JoFotara sending work in Community too, while the lock-date screen, the tax and financial reports and the annual closing review need Odoo Enterprise Accounting.

Lock in stages:

  • After the January filings, set the sales and purchase lock dates to 31 December 2026. Posting the tax closing entry sets the tax return lock date automatically.
  • Odoo refuses a global (Lock Everything) date while the period has unreconciled bank transactions, and an entry dated in a locked period moves to a later open date.
  • Run the balance sheet, profit and loss, aged receivables and payables and the tax report, then the annual closing review in Tax Returns, where each check shows Reviewed, To review or Anomaly.
  • Set the hard lock date only after the return is filed: it cannot be removed, allows no exceptions, and Odoo blocks it while draft entries remain.

10 costly year-end mistakes in Jordan, and your next step

Most year-end penalties in Jordan come from a handful of repeat mistakes, not from complex tax law. Each is cheap to prevent in December and expensive to fix in April. Check your 2026 close against these ten:

  • Treating 30 April 2027 as the target date, when it falls on a Friday.
  • Closing with invoices still To Send or Sent (Demo) in JoFotara.
  • Deducting local purchases that have no national e-invoice behind them.
  • Deleting or editing a sent invoice instead of issuing a linked credit note with a reason.
  • Remitting December withholdings late, at 0.4% a week.
  • Forgetting the second advance payment when gross business income passed JOD 1,000,000 the year before.
  • Valuing expired or slow-moving stock at full cost.
  • Expecting a tax deduction for general provisions the law does not name.
  • Setting the hard lock date before the auditor's adjustments are posted.
  • Destroying records early: the sales tax law requires five years and the income tax law four.

If you find an error after filing, the Income Tax Law lets you amend the return within two years of filing, paying any tax and delay fine due, unless an audit memo or an acceptance decision has already been issued or ISTD found the error first.

Your next step this week: open Odoo, filter 2026 invoices by JoFotara State, fix anything that is not Sent, and send each remaining error to the person who issued that invoice. If you are not on Odoo yet, or your books still live in spreadsheets, METCH, an official Odoo partner serving Jordan, can set up Odoo with the Jordan localization and JoFotara, migrate your opening balances, train your accountants on lock dates and closing reports, and support your team through the close. Frequently asked questions

What is the Jordan income tax return deadline in 2027?

For a company whose 2026 financial year ends on 31 December, the return and the balance of tax are due by 30 April 2027. That day is a Friday: Article 75 of the Income Tax Law moves a deadline that falls on an official holiday to the next working day, but filing by Thursday 29 April means you never depend on it. Filing late can cost a company a fine of up to JOD 300 (JOD 1,000 for shareholding companies), plus 0.4% of the unpaid tax per week of delay.

When must a limited liability company send audited statements to the Companies Control Department?

Before the end of the first three months of the new financial year, so by 31 March 2027 for a December year-end. Under Article 62 of the Companies Law, the manager prepares audited financial statements and an annual report for the partners' general assembly and sends a copy to the Companies Controller. The general assembly holds its annual meeting within the first four months of the year.

Can we close the year in Odoo Community, or do we need Enterprise?

Community can issue JoFotara invoices, because the Jordan localization and its e-invoicing modules are open source. The lock-date screen, balance sheet, profit and loss, aged receivables, the tax report and the annual closing review are part of Odoo Enterprise Accounting, so a full close inside Odoo calls for Enterprise.

How long must a Jordanian company keep its 2026 records?

At least five years. The General Sales Tax Law requires five years and the Income Tax Law four, each counted from the latest of the end of the tax period, the filing date or the assessment notice, and longer while a dispute is open. Odoo keeps the JoFotara XML attached to each submitted invoice, which makes later checks easier.
